Obama-mania has spilled over into the airline industry. At least two carriers -- including Charlotte's dominant airline -- plan to add flights to Washington, D.C.-area airports for the Jan. 20 inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.
Starting Jan. 17, US Airways will have more flights and larger planes going from Charlotte to the three D.C. airports: Dulles, Ronald Reagan and Baltimore-Washington. The airline also is adding flights to Washington from several other airports across the country.
All told, 27 additional flights are planned into the three D.C. airports on Jan. 17-18, while 16 additional flights are planned from the airports on Jan. 20-21. Customers can book travel on those flights starting this Saturday.
In addition, Southwest Airlines has announced augmented service for the inauguration, which will be on a Tuesday. As we all know, America's favorite low-cost carrier doesn't fly from Charlotte. But between Southwest and US Airways, I won't be surprised if other airlines tout additional flights timed with the inauguration in the days ahead.

The airports in the Washington, DC area are correctly named: Ronald Reagan - Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International, and Baltimore Washington International-Thurgood Marshall. If you are going to acknowledge former president Reagan, please acknowledge former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
Anonymous -get a grip! No one refers to the Baltimore airport as Thurgood Marshall. Although, may refer to National as Reagan.
No slight intended. Just using the most common shorthand. I'd say Reagan and National are a tie for usage. Probably should have said BWI for Baltimore. I never hear anyone call it Marshall. Thanks.
Why is it necessary to mention, yet again, that Southwest does not fly out of Charlotte. USAirways has done so much to help Charlotte get where its at and all you and this so-called newspaper can do is put us down. If USAirways disappeared no other airline would have as many flight here.
